After the first Typography Day in 2008, this year, the event was once again held at the Industrial Design Centre, IIT, Bombay. In sync with the theme of the conference, ‘Typography in Publication Design’, Aksharaya showcased an installation of newspapers mastheads collected from several nooks and corners of India. Newspaper mastheads being a reflection of the collective aesthetic of a community, this installation gave the audience a glimpse of the enormous diversity that our country offers. From major cities as well as some remote areas people sent across a variety of newspapers helping us build a collection of 500 plus mastheads that included no less than a range of 16 Indian languages spread across 12 different scripts! The collection process was carried out for almost two months before the event and taking a step further, Aksharaya now plans to document all the mastheads to make them available online. for public viewing.
